From Suck For Sam To Build For Sam

With the end of the New York Jets’ season being nothing more than a formality at this point, the team decided to make the news with something other than the team’s play. They announced a contract extension for wide receiver Quincy Enunwa. The extension covers a length of four years with a maximum value of $36 million. Sorry Quincy, you don’t get the fully guaranteed contract Kirk Cousins got last year from the Vikings, you’ll have to settle for $20 million in guarantees.

Enunwa may not be a household name for most teams in the NFL, but he has proven something this year. Time and time again this year, he has proven to be Sam Darnold’s favorite option to throw the football to. While this move is great for Enunwa and Jet fans should be excited for him, it is all about Sam. I was recently on the Landi Lodge podcast and I said that this offseason is the most important offseason for the Jets in my lifetime; this is just the beginning. The Jets have roughly $100 million in cap space to spend, good draft position, and most believe will have a new head coach once this season is over.

The Jets are about to enter an offseason in which every move they make is going to be geared towards the development of one player, Sam Darnold. The cap space will presumably be used to get him some offensive weapons from free agency and some defensive help which will help create better field position for what will be the year two field general. The draft picks will bring in more young talent to grow besides Sam and the rest of the team. The presumed head coach should be someone who can accentuate Sam’s ability and take the Jets to the next level the fans are so desperately ready for.

The Jets extending Enunwa is step one in building a team that caters to Sam Darnold and every other move will follow suit; how Sam responds is going to be the key to the Jets foreseeable future. In 2017-2018 season, the Jets sucked for Sam; in this coming offseason the Jets will spend for Sam. Let’s see what you got Sam.
