Early Monday evening, it was announced that the New York Yankees would not be extending a qualifying offer to Didi Gregorious. Before this season, the fan base may have lost their mind at this decision by the Yankees. Prior to his elbow injury, there was a desire from the fans to extend Didi and secure him for years to come. Clearly, the front office did not listen and as always in Cashman, Yankee fans trust.
If you are here for an unbiased opinion on Didi, thank you for giving me the visit and I hope you enjoy what you see on the site, but this post is not for you. I wholeheartedly love Didi and am sad to admit this is likely the end of him in the Bronx. Of course, the Yankees can still surprise me and agree to a deal that works for both sides, but one thing for sure is that it will be for less than $17 million. When right, Didi can be my team’s shortstop every day. He is a clutch hitter, amazing fielder, and a fantastic clubhouse presence; he grew into an outstanding replacement for Derek Jeter.
If this truly is the end of Didi’s Yankee legacy, I wish him all the best. So what does this mean for the Yankees? Assuming no major moves for a middle infielder, like the Francisco Lindor rumors that will absolutely pick up now, the Yankees will presumably move Gleyber to shortstop and DJ to second base. The Yankees will still have to decide, I think what to do with Andujar. Do you turn him into a first baseman and have him compete with Voit? Outfield? Second base and keep DJ at 1st?
The truth is this is the first domino to fall in a Yankees offseason that really can lead to a very different looking roster at the start of 2020.
