Super Bowl LIV(ed) Up To The Hype

Football is interesting. Fans wait and wait all week for their team to play one game. At the end of the season, there are only teams left to play that final game, but everyone’s eye balls are on the television screen. America loves the Super Bowl and they love the do-or-die environment that it brings. When it’s all said and done, only one fan base in America loves the Super Bowl and this year that is the fan base of the Kansas City Chiefs.

On Sunday night, the Chiefs took home their first championship in 50 years. They gave their head coach, Andy Reid, the final validation some feel he needed in finally winning a championship. They continued to show the league why they are a force to be reckon with for years to come. Patrick Mahomes took home the Super Bowl MVP award after willing his team back from yet another double digit deficit. The Chiefs had to come from behind in their prior two rounds, and many thought that doing so against the 49ers defense would be a much more insurmountable task; good thing for the Chiefs that Mahomes did not list. At one point, he went over to Tyreek Hill, who was dejected on the sideline and said “I need you to make a play.” He did and the momentum turned for good.

For all intents and purposes, the 49ers dominated this game for the most of it. They were able to run the ball whenever they wanted, averaging about 6 yards per attempt. They were not lighting up the scoreboard, but the offense was rolling and the defense was having their way with KC. I never played football growing up, but one thing I know from all other aspects of life is if something is working, especially if its your identity, you should keep doing it. Kyle Shanahan must think differently. They got away from what they do best in the second half of the game and it ended up costing them. I’m not here to tell you that Jimmy G is a bad quarterback, I actually think he is a good QB, however, the Niners relied on the run game to beat the Vikings and the Packers leading up to the big game last night. Jimmy G combined in the previous two games threw the ball 27 times. In case you were wondering, that’s almost laughable. Last night, in the Super Bowl, he threw the ball 31 times and the Niners ran the ball 22 times. For further reference, San Francisco was up 10 going into the fourth quarter, a time where it would sure make sense to break out some rushing attempts; but their head coach felt differently.

For most of the game, I thought it was kind of boring, but one thing I love to see is a dramatic fourth quarter come back led by the greatest QB the game has to offer; and for that reason, the Super Bowl lived up to the hype. Congratulations to the San Francisco 49ers on a fantastic season and congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on accomplishing your ultimate goal!
